Lithuania – (E2) Media ownership concentration regional (local) level

Score in short:

In general, regional concentration is fairly low in Lithuania; in most cases more than two competing news media outlets are available in each sector.

Score in detail:

Regional media are mainly owned by relatively small media companies with different owners. Each of the five biggest cities in the country (Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Panevėžys) has more than two media outlets competing in each sector. Few of the news media (newspapers) belong to the chains of bigger national dailies, but this is not a general trend.

Traditionally, regional newsrooms are small; also journalists working in regional newsrooms are paid less compared to what their colleagues are paid in the capital city. only a few national media have correspondents outside Vilnius, thus regions are covered by local journalists.
