The most common form of employment for journalists is a job contract. Very often media professionals also receive additional payment in the form of honorariums (which is fixed and written in job contract). The manner in which journalists get promoted differs in different organizations: some of these organize open competitions (Delfi.lt, other online news media), others follow rules and traditions in promoting their own media staff members (Lietuvos rytas). Lithuanian labor laws protect employees from being fired, and the Lithuanian Journalists Union employs lawyers to protect their members against unfair working conditions. Still, despite these different measures, a significant number of journalists were laid off as a response to budgetary savings in different media organizations.
