The first embryonic ethical recommendations were issued as early as in 1900, and have since been updated regularly. They are very well known in the newsrooms and are often referred to in the debate on media performance. They are issued by Pressens samarbetsnämnd, which is an umbrella organization for the main publishers’ associations and the journalists’ union. Pressens samarbetsnämnd also directs and finances the national press council, Pressens opinionsnämnd.
Sweden also has a number of specialized journalists’ associations for different purposes (investigative journalism, environmental journalism, science reporting, etc.) that discuss ethical issues within these sectors. Interviews at the national and the regional levels verify the importance attached to the recommendations made in the national code of ethics.
