While a vast amount of information is available on the Internet, as for example on the media companies’ websites, it takes a dedicated citizen to piece together a picture of the media in the country. Although bodies such as the Australian Communications and Media Authority publish regular reports, these are hardly ever brought to the attention of the general public. The government, universities or the union may offer information on a specialised aspect of the media, but this rarely amounts to a coherent or comprehensive picture of the Australian media. It has to be assumed that the average Australian citizen has little or no knowledge of the political economy of the Australian (news) media.
