Sweden – (C8) Professional training

Score in short:

Training is available, but the demand is higher than the supply.

Score in detail:

The overall attitude on the part of employers as well as employees is very positive towards further professional training. There is a special government financed institute for further education of journalists in the south of Sweden, Fojo, most often offering week-long courses at no charge, and where journalists keep their salaries during the course period. In addition there are a number of funds to which journalists can apply for scholarships for further education.

The public broadcasters Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Television have ambitious programmes for structured in-house training. Some national newspapers underline the possibilities for on-the-spot training by skilled veterans as news events unfold. The Journalists’ Union still thinks the efforts are too minuscule and lagging behind other sectors of knowledge-based production. Their goal is a week of further education each year for every journalist.
