Switzerland – (C3) Transparency of data on media system

Score in short:

Detailed information about ownership structure and decision-making processes of private media organizations are not open.

Score in detail:

Although media – or more precisely – journalists ask the important stakeholder for transparency, they themselves are very reluctant to lay bare internal information. In the recent course of takeovers of newspapers and changes of ownership in Switzerland, there are some examples of non-transparent activities, such as the buyout of a regional newspaper by a single person who refuses to give any information about his source of capital (cf. Strahm 2011).

The public broadcaster SRG SSR is obliged to present their data. The annual report gives insight into the structure and the finances.
