United Kingdom – (C3) Transparency of data on media system

Score in short:

There is a fairly high degree of transparency of data on the UK media.

Score in detail:

On this measure, the UK scores quite well. The BBC is committed to transparency and accountability and its website bears testimony to this. Ofcom, too, has an excellent website and produces a wealth of data on UK communications sector, including biennially a very comprehensive Communications Market Report (with less detailed annual interim reports). Data on newspaper circulations is published by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), data on television audiences by the Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board (Barb), and data on radio audiences by Radio Joint Audience Research (Rajar), all of which have websites which make core data available on a cost-fee basis. However, there could be more transparency with regard to measuring and informing the public about media ownership and control and the commercial interests of news media.
