Question: Does the mission statement of the media company or the newsroom contain provisions on playing an active role as watchdogs / on investigative journalism or other forms of power control? Has the mission statement have any relevance in practice?
Both the chief editors and journalists in all the selected news media for the research talks about their investigative journalism as an important part of their daily work and ideology in the business. They take their role as watchdog seriously.
However, we must distinguish between several ways of conducting investigative journalism. First, this is done through the journalist´s daily work. It is crucial for journalism to reveal matters that are important to society and the rest of the population. This is simply seen as something that journalism are depending on and something that is inherent in any journalistic practice. We can see this in the way the question was answered by for example this editor in chief:
“Then the question immediately becomes “What is investigative journalism?”. I mean in way that most of journalism is investigative. So I would say that investigative journalism is absolutely crucial for the online newspaper and for all media”.
Second, in some projects, journalists dig a little extra in the material and matters they work with. This may be having to apply for access to certain documents or for example do even more thorough work with sources. Thirdly, journalists can get funds from the company to specifically dig into a case. This is usually much larger projects that require more time and money. In such cases, some journalists are just working with this specific case and taken off their everyday duties in the newsroom. Through various levels and degrees of investigative journalism, journalism have to roles of watchdogs.
Regardless of the degree, this is an important field.
There is therefore no doubt that the mission statement have relevance in practice. Together with the importance of conducting investigative journalism, this is something that is inherent in the Norwegian media companies and their journalistic practice.

Hvor viktig er gravende journalistikk for bedriften?

Undersøkende journalistikk er veldig viktig, men det kommer litt an på hva du mener med undersøkende journalistikk. Det finnes jo mange typer undersøkende journalistikk og det som kanskje vi har fokusert særlig på de siste årene, er på en måte å være mer sånn .. hverdagsundersøkelser, som er mer sånn å følge opp den daglige journalistikken litt ekstra. Heller enn å sette ned sånne ekstremt tunge, langvarige prosjekter, som for eksempel denne VILO-saken som var her i Bergen i høst. Ja, det var en app, der mange foreldre som ikke skulle hatt informasjon om barna, ble lagt til. Det er ikke sånn kjempetungt, men det er bare det å ettergå, følge på og liksom følge på til bunns da. Det er kjempeviktig. Jeg tror det har to funksjoner [undersøkende journalistikk]. Det ene er jo rett og slett det at man avdekker jo faktisk forhold som ellers ikke ville blitt avdekket. Ofte er det tilfeller der egentlig, offentlige myndigheter eller andre, har interesse av at ting kommer ut og da har journalistikken en funksjon at vi kan finne ut av ting. Den andre funksjonen er jo det at det er en slags, på en måte, frykten for at ting blir avslørt, kan være vel så viktig. Det har jo betydning.

Da er spørsmålet med en gang “Hva er undersøkende journalistikk?”. Jeg mener jo på en måte at det aller meste av journalistikk er undersøkende. Så jeg vil si at undersøkende journalistikk er helt avgjørende for nettavisen og for alle medier.
