South Korea – (F11) Protection of journalists against (online) harassment

Score in short:

Cyberstalking is a huge problem in South Korea. Most firms protect their employees and try to prevent traumatic experiences, especially for less-experienced journalists.

Score in detail:

Cyberstalking has emerged as a big problem in South Korea. Violent comments – sometimes with personal threats – are prevalent in the polarised political environment. Journalists’ work e-mails are disclosed on the articles they author, and some receive e-mails with profanities for no evident reason. No specific law is in place to protect journalists from these comments or e-mails. Libel laws apply to online comments, and they are currently the only legal protection journalists have.

Interviews show that firms provide therapy and other medical costs. However, what is more dangerous in terms of harassment is not harassment itself, but self-censorship due to repeated incidents.
